Question one

Elememt x and y reacts electrovalently to produce xy. In the course of the reaction x and y was observed in period 4 and 3 respectively and x having 2 valence electrons.
(A) identify x and y
(B) State the product formed by x and y
(C) give the redox and chemical equation.

Solutions;
X= period 4
Y= period 3
If x has 2 valence electrons, then it is a group two element.
Therefore,
X= calcium
Y = sulphur

(A) x= calcium
Y = sulphur

(B) the product of the reaction is calcium sulhide(CaS) . That is sulphur atom reacting with one calcium atom ( since calcium has two (2) valence electrons].

(C) redox equation
Ca ------ ca2+ + 2e-

S+ 2e ------- 2S-

By addition,

Ca + S ------  ca2+ + 2S-

Chemical equation

Ca + S---------: CaS

Question two

Elememt A and B reacts electrovalently to produce AB In the course of the reaction B and A was observed in period 3 and 4 respectively and A in group one.
(A) identify A and B
(B) State the product formed by A and B
(C) give the redox and chemical equation.
(D) represent the information diagramatically.

Solutions;

B= period 3
A= period 4 and group one (1)

(a) A = potassium (K)

B = chlorine (Cl)

(b) potassium chloride (kcl)

(c) for redox reaction
K --------- K+     +      e
Cl + e ------- Cl-
By addition,
K + Cl ------------ K+     +     Cl-

(d)the diagramatic representation of the information above

Ionic bonding between potassium and chlorine
Electrovalent bonding between potassium and chlorine
