7 STEPS ON HOW TO HAVE AN “A” IN ORGANIC CHEMISTRY

Organic chemistry has been considered by students as one of the difficult branch of chemistry. Here we will be discussing 7 perfect steps on how to give it a heavy blow. The steps are as follows;

1.     Be positive minded: the first success you will have while taking an organic chemistry course is to be positively minded i.e. take the course or subject to be very easy and simple to deal with. For example, I, remembered in my final year when took organic reaction mechanism, at first it seems I was doing something out of this world, then I realize that I must be positively minded to succeed and bang “A” in that course. At the end of that course I had an “A”. Having a positive mindset is not all, but putting these seven (7) steps into action will make your positive mindset produce good results.

2.     Gather the necessary materials: some students while offering an organic course put together irrelevant materials to study i.e. materials that are not profitable. Having the necessary materials keeps your mind relaxed and focused on a particular task.

3.     Put together the right past questions: getting the right past questions will instantly tell you what to the in that organic course you are about to take. I do tell students not to get past question and forget about the materials given. The past question will just serve as a mini road map to your success and will only add about 20%-30% of your success sometimes. That is it can make you pass (if used properly) and can make you fail (if used the wrong way).

4.     Get the course outline: the purpose of a course outline is not to know where the instructor/teacher stopped, but for you to be ahead of the instructor/teacher. When you have the course outline it helps you understand at every point what next to read and study and at the same time gives you a glimpse of what you are facing. During my undergraduate days, I used my course outline as effective as possible and it guided me throughout the period and at the same time reduced my stress

.

5.     Study ahead: if you are sure you want to deal with organic chemistry, you must study ahead and to make this happen you need course outline and past questions. This when done properly and at the right time, will help for effective understanding in lectures even when it seems like French mixed with mathematics for some students. When I discovered that studying ahead was an effective tool for success, I took it very serious and utilized it to the best of my abilities.       NOTE: studying ahead will help you understand faster, better and enable you pass with ease.

6.     Be familiar with the terms in organic chemistry: this will enable you to understand the course as you study progressively. Examples include; hemolytic andheterolytic fission, electronegativity, homologous series, functional group, electromeric effect, hyperconjugation, inductive effect etc.

7.     Lastly, study, do not cram: when you cram organic chemistry it is either you have a “D” or “F”. Proper study with repetition helps you understand more because organic chemistry is very volatile. With this seven (7) points, and proper adherence, you will find yourself swimming in the pool of A’s.
